📏 How to Measure for Horse Weight Estimation
This is useful when you don’t have access to a weighbridge. All you need is a soft measuring tape (or string + tape measure).
1. Heart Girth Measurement
What It Is:
The circumference around the horse’s chest, just behind the front legs and withers.
How to Measure:
-
Stand the horse square and relaxed on level ground.
-
Place the tape measure:
-
Just behind the withers
-
Wrap under the belly, just behind the elbows
-
-
Pull snug, but not tight (don’t compress fat/muscle).
-
Record in centimetres (cm)
🟨 Pro Tip: The tape should follow the contour of the horse — not be angled or hanging loose.
2. Body Length Measurement
What It Is:
The length from the point of the shoulder to the point of the buttock.
How to Measure:
-
Stand to the side of your horse.
-
Start your tape at the point of the shoulder (in front of the chest).
-
Extend the tape to the point of the buttock (not the dock of the tail, but where the hindquarter rounds out).
-
Make sure the tape runs in a straight line, not along the body contour.
-
